Side Effects of Studying: #2 I’m always sleepy

Last time we discussed Insomnia; being unable to sleep. So what happens when you’re unable to sleep properly for a few days?? You become sleep deprived, since you spend most of the time rolling from one side of the bed to the other thinking, worrying and by extension not sleeping, when you’re supposed to be giving your brain and body sometime to cool off and refresh.

Lately, I’ve been having some trouble sleeping immediately after I lie down and that to some extent has been handled because I don’t get that feeling everyday. But it happens often.

The time when I start studying during the day is fixed – these days I start at 10 in the morning. I plan in such a way that I go to sleep around 2.30 AM max, so that I get at least 7 hours of sleep if I want to be up by 9.30 AM. But do I fall asleep at 2.30??? I think we all know the answer to THAT.

Since I’m supposed to start at 10, it means the time that I have for sleeping reduces, and that effectively leaves me feeling drowsy and sleepy all day. I can’t go to sleep, because if I sleep during the day…

a)      I will sleep for hours at a stretch, because let’s face it, Insomnia aside, I love to sleep. And since I have been feeling sleepy, now sleep will come like I’ve not slept in weeks; and

b)      It’ll disturb my schedule. It is with a lot of difficulty that I’ve managed to get (a major part of my) sleep during the night and very little during the day. I don’t want to go back to being nocturnal because that has its own side effects (of course, coming up in another post later.)

So what do I do??? I can’t study because I’m sleepy and it’ll be as good as not studying because your brain can’t register anything. I can’t sleep because that’ll mess with my body clock again.

So I do nothing. I just try to stay awake so that my body gets adjusted to this routine and not try to mess with my tired brains. Here are a few ways to stay awake when you’re feeling sleepy… listen to music, watch TV, talk to people; basically do things that keep you active and don’t bore you. By the end of the day you’ll be tired and sleepy enough drift into a deep sleep before you even realize you’ve hit the bed. Sure it’s a waste of an entire day, but it’s just one day.

And it helps if you do some dancing and rigorous exercise to loud music… (I had my Shiamak Dance class today… It’s strenuous, but soooo relaxing!!!)

And that’s what I did today! 😀
